- What inspired you to start your blog?
It was a very random hunch actually! A few years ago, I started sweetlifeblog.com and I wanted to move onto something new. So I created thefreespirit.co. The name was a perfect fit for me and I felt like I could do a lot with it. I want to be the voice that speaks to the person with a wild heart, and for those that choose to follow their dreams regardless of what others say.
- Have you met anyone interesting/famous on your blogging journey?
Yes! Instagram connects you with so many wonderful people. I have received lots of heartwarming messages from followers saying that they love my content or that they could relate to my articles. A few months back I got my favourite vegan YouTuber follow me on Instagram! She also liked and commented on one of my photos I reposted of her! It was so surreal. I also had my favourite musician Mat Kearney like my photo and comment on it so I was freaking out when that happened.
- How do you manage your time to efficiently & effectively run your blog?
My current job(Tour Guide) allows me to be flexible. Which gives me a few days off every week to write some posts and do things that I enjoy. My situation will change soon once I land a full time job. But even then, I will be sure to squeeze in at least 4 hours every week for some blog posts. I am a night owl and I get very creative in the evening and that is usually when I enjoy writing my posts.
- Is blogging your profession or just a hobby?
Ha! I get this question all the time so I would love to answer it again. It is my hobby. My current job allows me to travel around Canada and NYC so during my travels I take lots of pictures and write lots of reviews. I have been lucky to have that experience and because of it I am able to generate a lot of content for my blog. With this blogging hobby of mine, I love the perks that come along with it. I get to attend blogging events and occasionally get sent free clothes from brands I love. So I guess I could say it is a hobby with pleasant surprises.
- Do you have any specific goals for the rest of this year?
I want to see my work published in few publications/magazines that are focused on eco friendly/fair trade fashion and lifestyle. I also want to do more collaborations with vegan/fair trade clothing brands.
- Can you name some of your favourite bloggers and explain why they are your favourites?
Sazan Hendrix is my favourite Youtube and Blogger. Her story on how she got started is very inspirational and emotional. fashionelka.pl is actually my default web page. She is a polish blogger that I look up to very much. Siffat from Icing and Glitter is a fashion inspiration and her blog posts are super flawless.
- Did you have any professional help or did you created the blog yourself?
I created this blog myself! It was a fun creative project of mine and I loved every second of it!
- Who takes the majority of your photos?
For my fashion blog posts I work with awesome photographer Hendrick Lau from Toronto. We met at a blogging event and we have worked well together ever since. As for the travel photos and daily memes I create those myself. I use my I Phone 6S and for editing I love VSCO and or Adobe Photoshop.
- What do you find frustrating about blogging?
It’s an investment. You put a lot of time and money into this hobby. You have to be very patient with whatever it is you want, whether that be followers, collaborations or even website traffic. I struggle with SEO, and at times I wish my blog was doing better in terms of traffic but I am taking it bit by bit. I will get there eventually, I know I will.
- Where would you like to be in blogging five years from now?
I would like to reach out and start doing sustainable travel reviews. My dream is to open an online store where I could start selling vegan and fair trade clothes. I want to inspire others to turn away from fast fashion and make the switch to slow fashion. I believe this switch is very important because there are way too many workers suffering while creating fast fashion. Whether it be their harsh working conditions/not being paid enough or being victims to human trafficking. I don’t want someone on the other side of the world suffer just because they had to make my $20 shirt I will throw out in a few months.
I hope you all enjoyed getting to know Nicole as much as I have! Thanks again for letting me feature you on the blog, Nicole!
