Guest Post: How to Turn Your Garage into a Photo Studio

Note from Lana | Lifestyle Queen Bee: When I lived in Kanata (Ottawa), I remember so many houses in my neighbourhood having garages that served another purpose other than storing your car (& that tent you haven’t touched since Junior High). Some people created another room to their home, while some used it as a ‘man cave’. What about using it as the space you create and/or conduct business? Guest blogger, Maurine Anderson, is sharing tips and tricks on how to turn your garage into your very own photo studio! Continue reading “Guest Post: How to Turn Your Garage into a Photo Studio”

Maintain Your Shoes Quality With These Great Tips!

You know how sometimes you buy a pair of shoes and almost immediately (after you break them in), they become practically the only shoes you put on? And you wonder how you survived without them; however, there will come a time that they will start to look shabby and worn.

The key is to prolong that from happening as much as possible. Your feet are precious and they can get sore easily especially if you are standing a lot or walking a lot for work or travel. That’s why if you find a pair of shoes that you love in terms of comfort and fashion, it really is a find. I think we all at some stage in our lives, have experienced pain in a foot or on a toe and it can really hinder your movement! Shoe quality does vary but it is possible to get a good and comfortable pair of shoes at a lower price, it’s all about knowing what suits the size of your foot. Get measured and establish if you should, for example, be looking for wider fitting options or if half sizes are your friend. Ask your local store assistant to measure you!

This infographic from the guys at Walsh Brothers Shoes is a handy guide on how to keep your shoes in top-tip condition. It details how best to store your shoes, what not to do, how to polish them so that they are gleaming and lots more, check it out!

Guest Post: Reinvent Your Style with These Trendy Pieces

Note from Lana | Lifestyle Queen Bee: One of the favourite parts of a new season is when you can switch up your wardrobe and your look in general. When I moved to Toronto last year, I decided to implement more of the styles and trends that I have always loved but never dared to try in Ottawa. While I love my hometown, being too trendy or ‘dressed up’ always garnered a raised eyebrow. Now that I am living in a more fashion forward city where people embrace style and uniqueness, I feel I can truly be myself. My guest today is Amy Mia Goldsmith from High Style Life, who is sharing some great tricks on how to reinvent your style.

True, we should not fall prey to trends and purchase every trendy item we see on the pages of fashion magazines or items filling your Instagram feed. However, once your sense of personal style is established and solidified, there is no reason why a gal shouldn’t indulge in a few trendy pieces. They keep you current and fresh, plus, they make a great addition to your wardrobe arsenal, and we all know we need this kind of refreshment every now and then. As long as you rock them in your own unique way and don’t allow for the item to take over and outshine your existing sense of style, there is every reason to splurge on an ‘it’ item; just make sure you wear it like nobody else – it is all about staying true to yourself, and every true fashionista knows how to wear her clothes, not let them wear her, so ready, set, here we go.

Preppy with a Twist

Sure, blazers can be cool and give the look a polished yet casual look at the same time, and that is why we love them. However, they do have a reputation of being a tad preppy, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing; if you love your blazers, but feel that they are turning a corner towards Dullsville Street, perhaps it is time to shake things up with a pop of color? In terms of color, the runways have shown us that the eighties are back and brighter than ever, so, why not go with an eclectic, electric blue fitted blazer? It will turn heads, give you a confidence boost and make you look absolutely fierce, and have people believing that there is not a dull moment in your life.

Bare Those Shoulders

When it comes to trends, the combination of ruffles and off the shoulder blouses and dresses has taken over not only the runways and streets, but social media as well. Reminiscent of Club Tropicana, these pieces are here to bring a whole lot of fun into your style, not to mention that they are just revealing enough to tease (nothing sexier than bare shoulders), but still decent enough to be worn even by the more conservative gals. The pattern that has been dominant this year is hands down the baby blue and white stripes, but if you aren’t a fan of this color palette, there is still a whole range of colors to explore.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Sure, we all love breezy sundresses, but as this is a wardrobe refreshment session, why not mix it up a bit and go for cute playsuits for a change? They are equally breezy, and they sure have that magic touch at making your legs look amazingly long and slender. Plus, when in a playsuit, you are bound to feel cheeky and well, playful. On top of that, unlike with skirts, you have nothing to fear when the wind decides to blow.

Crisp Whiteness

For a long time, white shirts have had the reputation of looking a bit too sharp and even too corporate. Well, the time has come for the shirt to be reinvented in a whole new way. The trendy white shirts of today have a looser fit and are significantly longer. This leaves room for a whole lot of fun when mixing and matching. You can dress it up with a colorful scarf or belt, or dress it down by unbuttoning a few buttons and rolling the sleeves in a slightly haphazard manner for that effortless looking impression.

Small, Minimal, Effective

As minimalism is definitely a trend holding the reigns this season, and clean geometric lines are as dominant as they’ll ever be, your perfect statement bag should most definitely be a geometric black and white clutch. It oozes sophistication with a touch of whimsy, and since it’s black and white, you can combine it with everything you have. This kind of clutch is definitely a glue to hold and elevate the entire outfit, and it will certainly not go unnoticed.

Shoes on Point

We thought that pointy-toed shoes were out for good, but they are definitely back, and ready for your feet to rock them. The reason: well, there is nothing that is more flattering or does the legs more justice in terms of elongating them, enhancing elegance (especially when paired up with a sleek pencil skirt). While you could go with a nude option, to truly make an impact, take a risk and go for patent leather ones in red or yellow, for that true va-va-voom effect.

Thanks, Amy for such a fantastic piece! I’m definitely going to be using all these tips into my own fashion!

Guest Post: Do You Struggle With Anxiety?

Note from Lana | Lifestyle Queen Bee: I have anxiety. I’ve had it for as long as I can remember. A lot of people misinterpret worry for anxiety. Anxiety can really impact your life by always preventing you from doing the things you enjoy or even need to do. People with anxiety often feel embarrassed to let people know & suffer in silence. Personally, I have no problems sharing my struggles with anxiety with people (I also have OCD) so this post, shared with us by one of my regular guests Christine H, is for those who are struggling with anxiety & providing you with ways to cope with it. Guest Post: The One Thing That You Need for That Ultimate Life Change

Note from Lana | Lifestyle Queen Bee: At one point in our life, we fall into a rut. We never mean to get there; it kinda just happens. While having a routine can help keep you organized and structured, it also is one of the first things that traps you in the same old thing, day in and day out. A lot of times, once we’ve found ourselves in a rut, we’re not quite sure how to get out. Today’s post, by guest blogger Kelly Walsh from essaychip, is sharing with us that one thing we need to help us make a change in our lives.

Okay. I get it. Nothing ever seems right. I mean, you keep on doing your best. You do your best at the office. You do your best getting along with people you’re not very close with. You do your best to be a good son or daughter. The list goes on.

To be really honest, you actually have no idea why everything in your life seems wrong. As far as you know, you’ve doing what you think is right. Yet, nothing good seems to come out of it.

These sort of things keeps on going on and on in your head, even when you know the answer to your musings. You know that you’re not really the reason these things are happening. I mean, you’re not the only one living on this vast planet. Even if you try to do everything right, things can still go wrong because other creatures affect your life too.

But even if you keep that thought in your head all the time, it will do nothing to cheer you up. It doesn’t change the fact that you’re beating yourself off trying to make things right, but things just never go right.

You want to change the way you live. You want to wake up someday and just laugh at this matter, but you just can’t.

You’ve already read all the life-improvement books you can possibly read. They’re not working. It’s either that or you’re just not following their advice right.

Look, it’s not you. The real reason why your life is like this is because you have no outlet. The truth is you’re not alone. We all go through these sorts of things. You’re not the only one who thinks that nothing in his life is going right. Everyone does it. The only difference is other people know how to go with it. The answer all lies in an outlet. You need something that can help you let all your frustrations out.

Here’s another truth you probably hear every time, but just never took the time to think about: life is unfair. That’s that. You have to deal with that fact. You should know how to move on when things don’t go exactly as you planned.

What does an outlet have anything to do with my life?

Well, that’s a pretty good question.

I mean, if you want to change your life, then there’s your answer. You need to change, but it’s not that simple.

You might be thinking of that big change, but unless you completely throw your grudges and negative experiences in the trash bin, it’ll keep on haunting you, and then you’ll never be able to reach the finish line of the “change” race.

Do you know what you really need?

No, you don’t need another one of those best-selling life-improvement books. What you need is a blog.  It’s just perfect. How come? Well, read on to find out.

  1. There’s no right or wrong way of doing it

You don’t have to worry about making mistakes. You don’t have to worry about anything else going wrong.

Isn’t that what brought you in this state in the first place? The fear of losing? The fear of failure? The fear of criticism?

It’s good to know that when everything in your life fails, there is someplace you can go where you don’t have to ever worry about messing up, and that’s online, on your blog.

You can write about your life in any way you want. You can say anything you want. Once you let it all out changing your life will come easy.

  1. You’ll be connected with the right kind of people

We don’t get to choose the people we are surrounded with. Sometimes we do, but most of the time it’s the opposite.

I mean, we have the freedom to choose the kind of friends we have, but having a specific group of friends doesn’t mean that other people can’t affect us. Their decision matters in our lives.

We live on one planet. Whatever they do we’ll all be affected at some point. When things go bad, we can feel like we have no one to turn to, especially if we’re surrounded by people who don’t share the same views, but through a blog, you’ll be able to meet and befriend people who share the same values as you.

Thanks for such an insightful post, Kelly!

Guest Post: Four Stages of Blogging Success

Note from Lana | Lifestyle Queen Bee: When you first start a blog, you never realize how much work really goes into it. There are some days where I have a million things going on in my life that pull me away from my blog that is why being organized is key. If you’re thinking about starting a blog or have just launched yours and now are wondering ‘what next?’, today’s guest post by Christine H. will be an informative and timely read.

Many people start a blog thinking that it’ll just be a hobby; but if you want to be able to generate revenue from it, it requires a lot more than a hobby’s worth of investment. It will take time, education, consistency, and a clever game plan in order to be successful.

As an online marketer in a company that focuses on SEO, I’ve learned a few things about what makes a site thrive. Every blog will be different, but it might be helpful to see a brief outline of a game plan that can help your blog’s launch be successful. As with all marketing and communication ventures, an integrated and time-released approach can help you get the most out of the work that you do.

[ Stage 1: Setup ]

Did you know that Google has a time delay on how they rank websites? It’s very difficult for a new site to get any kind of traction on search results during the first few months of its existence. This is Google’s way of weeding out sites that pop up and then quickly lapse as the webmaster or blogger loses interest quickly. That’s why the earlier that you start your blog, the better!

This is your time to figure out all the technical aspects of your blog. Choose a host, a CMS platform, a name and domain. Pick a theme and tagline, and fill out your “about me” section.

This stage of development can be the most fun, but it can also be difficult to get the impetus you need to get going. Remember that you can change the appearance of your blog whenever you want, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself to get it perfect from the get-go. The site will grow and develop as you do!

[ Stage 2: Content, Content, Content! ]

The key to a successful site is valuable content. Why else would people come visit? Most search engines value original content more than any other factor. Readers, commenters, and fans will naturally follow when you put out high-quality and steady content. So, before you start to worry about marketing and social media, make sure that visitors have a comfortable place to visit. Set yourself a content schedule and try to create something new regularly.

At the beginning, brainstorm some topics you want to write about. Think about certain series that you could do. Research topical ideas, like focusing on mental health month or talking about the hype before a big movie or book is released (all depending on what it is that you blog about, of course). Remember that not everything you write has to be about what’s new for you this week. Find tangents, do research, and explore new things!

[ Stage 3: Social Media Management and Networking ]

Once you have a good amount of content on your site, you’re ready to start propelling new visitors. This is an area where time is important (building a good following will take you a few months, at least, of solid effort). However, you don’t want to launch your social media pages and invite people to like it before you have content on your site. You might turn off some of your best cheerleaders if they don’t see anything there to attract their attention.

Set up accounts on all the major social media networks, including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter. If you want to build your blog as more of a business, you might want to look into Google+ pages and LinkedIn as well. In order to streamline your efforts there, you can set up a HootSuite account, which syncs all your accounts and makes it possible to manage multiple platforms at a time.

Start by inviting your friends and acquaintances to like your accounts and your blog. At the very least, share links for your new content on social media. However, you should go farther than that. Engage in conversations around your topic. Follow other bloggers who talk about similar things and share their content as well. Comment on others’ efforts, and adjust your own content to react to what’s going on in the niche that you occupy.

Reach out to other bloggers that interest you. Look for opportunities to build your audience through guest blogging, link parties, and syndicated content.

[ Stage 4: Stay Consistent! ]

Second only to your initial startup efforts, this is the hardest part of blogging. Stick to the schedule that you set yourself for content creation. Set yourself specific goals and evaluate past successes and failures in order to be more effective as you progress. This post has some great suggestions for keeping the impetus you need. Keep working on your social media sites. Reach out to new people and be responsive when people reach out to you.

After 4-6 months, you’ll start seeing amazing returns on all the time that you’ve invested, so keep your chin up until then!
